Understanding Castor Braking Systems

Braking castors feature one of a number of styles of braking systems, allowing them to be immobilised. When engaged, the castor’s wheel will stop, preventing any unwanted rolling or movement of the castor. There are several types of braking systems that use different technologies to achieve the braking.

Types of braking systems

Pad Brake

This system consists of a brake pad and a lever activated by the foot. When you push the lever, the brake pad engages and presses against the wheel, similar to the brakes on a car. You can feel the brake engaging and quickly disengage it, even with a steel toe-capped boot. This type of brake is best suited for heavy-duty castors.

Central Lock

This system comprises an arm that extends over the castor and wheel tread. Similar to the cam braking mechanism, it is activated by stepping on a pedal. Simply pushing the pedal on a top lock braking system will cause the arm to descend onto the wheel.

Total Lock

This system does more than just prevent the castors from rolling; it also prevents them from swivelling. When you push down on the pedal, the total lock brake locks two mechanisms simultaneously: the castor wheel and the swivel head. Most total locking brakes feature on kingpin castors, but they are unsuitable for towing. If you plan to buy a swivelling castor, you may want to consider opting for the total lock braking system.

Cam

This popular system involves a foot-activated lever or pedal located on the side of the wheel. To immobilise the wheel, you simply push down on the lever, which will then squeeze the wheel by pressing against the fork of the castor.

Summary

Choosing the right brake for your castors depends on various factors, such as the application, the operator’s requirements, and the specific needs of your equipment. For instance, you might want a brake pedal that remains stationary to prevent leg injuries, or you may need a brake solution that can handle heavy-duty applications. Additionally, it may be crucial to lock both the swivel head and castor wheel. Considering all these factors, it is essential to take your time and select the right brake that meets your needs.
